Artist's Statement
I admire colour theorists and the alchemical way they use formulas and procedures in their transmutation of base pigments into a vibrant aesthetic conversation.
Although I don't intend my abstract artwork to have any particular hidden meanings, I do acknowledge the capability of colour to induce feeling in the viewer. I do not try to paint what I feel, but alternatively use the process as a means of meditative introspection. With each step of my process I engage in a combination of automatism and logical restraint, pushing against the flow of paint while its state of fluidity pulls in the other direction.
All abstract artists search for some sort of visual reality that makes sense to their personal outlook. I want to hover between the control of, and the surrender to, the elements with which I produce my art, have discovered a freedom in embracing the lack of complete dominance of the situation and blurring the lines between accident and purpose.
While I intend to use many of my abstracts as grounds obliterated by more representative imagery, there are some instances where I feel there is sufficient play between the painting's colour and compositional elements to deserve it being sealed as a finished abstract artwork.
