Rebel Art Space, Bangkok

Exhibition Statement
Arise was Rebel Art Space's first exhibition as part of its residency programme curated by Sai Wannaphon Chimbangchong and featured artwork across a range of disciplines by Thai and international artists Arindam Sarker (India), Nawat Lertsawaengkit (Thailand), Pramet Klangmuenwai (Thailand) and Paul Ulan-Taylor (UK/Philippines/Thailand). An opening reception was held on Tuesday the 19th of May, 2015.

Rebel Art Space Residency was initiated by Thai artist Vasan Sitthiket and his team in 2015 with aims to provide artists with space to create and develop their artistic practices as well as foster an environment of creative exchange. The residency programme invites artists to visit and produce artwork in Vasan Sitthiket’s country home and art studio as well as their Bangkok-based gallery.

Sitthiket’s riverside studio sits on eight acres of land in the Chum Saeng district of Nakhorn Sawan province approximately 250 km north of Bangkok. The residency’s main block centres around the pond and artist living area with footpaths branching out into the fruit-tree filled grounds where warehouses serve as work areas and equipment such as ceramics kiln and large scale wood-block print can be found.

Arise celebrates efforts in reconstruction and rejuvenation of Sitthiket’s studio in the years after the 2011 floods which inundated Thailand’s northern and central regions. The exhibition featured ceramics, sculpture, installations and paintings of different mediums.
